What is the BMAT?
The BioMedical Admissions Test, or BMAT, is a test used by medical universities in the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Thailand and Malaysia to assess your suitability for a medical degree course. It gives you the chance to strengthen you university application by showing your scientific and mathematical aptitude under test conditions, a well as your ability to problem-solve and communicate.
The BMAT is a two hour written test, and is required by certain medical, dental and veterinary universities. The test is made up of three sections; Section one covers problem solving, data analysis and reasoned argument, section two tests scientific and mathematical knowledge, and section three assesses your ability to develop and communicate new ideas. Sections one and two are multiple choice, where section three is essay-style.
How London Medical Academy can prepare you for the BMAT
Our experienced team have developed our pre-med course to specifically prepare you for your BMAT, by familiarising you with the required content of the test, coaching you on past papers, and preparing you for time pressure – all with the aim of boosting your BMAT score.
In terms of BMAT scoring, sections one and two are graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with 9 being the highest. For reference, the average score is between 3 and 5, with 6 being high and 7 being exceptional. There is no passing mark, as tests vary each year, so your result will be compared with other applicants to your chosen course when the university is considering applications.
If you’re applying to a medical school which requires a BMAT, our pre-med course is here to make sure you feel confident and prepared for this important step in your medical education. Our experienced lecturers prepare you for the knowledge-based sections of the exam, as well as giving you the experience needed to deliver high-quality answers in the written section. BMAT sessions take place twice each year, with one in August and one in October. Applicants to the University of Oxford must take the October exam, whereas applicants for most other universities can choose from either date. Please check which BMAT session you need to take beforehand, as you can only take the exam once per application season. More detailed information on which test session is right for you can be found on the Cambridge Assessment homepage.
