The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Târgu Mureș began in 1945 as part of the Faculty of Medicine of the Bolyai University of Cluj Napoca. Shortly thereafter, the Faculty of Medicine moved to Târgu Mureș. It officially became The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Târgu Mureș in 1991. This public university is the only healthcare university where teaching is in Romanian, Hungarian, and English. The university has over 3200 students and over 700 teachers and researchers.

The six-year program at the Târgu Mureș medical university admits 100 students from around the world each year with and two rounds of admission sessions: early (April) and regular admission (September). It trains students using the standard system of transferable credits (360 ECTS) and provides medical training of specific skills and abilities that will allow them to succeed in their professional careers.

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy recently initiated curriculum reform to allow students to gain a clearer view on their studies. Case-based learning and clinical internships are further emphasized. A Simulation and Medical Skills Centre was recently opened with three departments: Medical Skills, Medical Simulation and Standardized Patient. This was created to give students at Târgu Mureș medical university the best quality education in accordance with the highest European standards for medical education.

In addition, partnerships with foreign universities were created to make possible the mobility of students and teachers at other prestigious European universities. The university is accredited by the Romanian Ministry of Education and recognized throughout the European Union. Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine Târgu Mureș medical university can continue their studies or residencies in Europe and throughout the world.
